Black History Month takes place every October and is a celebration of the culture, history, and achievements of African and Caribbean communities and their diaspora.
First celebrated in the UK in October 1987, Black History Month gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate, and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.
British society and culture has been enriched because of all those who have come to the UK to build their lives. Their contributions, as well as the contributions of their descendants, have had a profound and positive effect on all of us. Black History Month gives us all the opportunity to celebrate these contributions and honour the accomplishments of black Britons throughout our history.
Standing Firm in Power and Pride
The theme for Black History Month 2025 is 'Standing Firm in Power and Pride', a proud recognition of the resilience, achievements, and contributions of all those who have shaped history. It is also a recognition of the power that our students have, and the pride they should have in their own actions and the impact they can have on those around them.
What it means to you
We all have stories to tell and we want to hear yours. We want to know which icons from Black British history have influenced you. We want to hear about the people in your life that have given you inspiration. And we want you to share with us what pride means to you.
Get in touch with your stories and we will share these throughout the month.
