What your Membership Means
This page outlines what you get out of your society or sports club membership and the importance of paying the joining fee.
This page outlines the following:
Sport Club Membership
Memberships are an essential part of university sports clubs and cover a broad array of components throughout the year. All memberships have to be paid prior to playing in any fixtures.
Failure to pay membership will result in you not being able to attend training sessions or be part of the club in question.
Due to COVID-19, and the situation we find ourselves in, we have a new membership model in place to ensure memberships are value for money and students are being charged appropriately.
Your memberships will go on sale on Saturday 12th September to coincide with the start of Welcome Weekend.
Below are the three forms of memberships that most of our clubs will offer. As all clubs are unique, not all forms of memberships are appropriate for some clubs in terms of how they run. However, we have been in conversations with all clubs individually about what works best for them.
So what do all these memberships mean?
This is the initial membership members will need to purchase to become part of your club. Through purchasing this membership, a student can be a member of your club and take part in events and socials you put on, as well as join your social media groups. It is similar to a social membership.
Once your club is able to train or engage in it’s typical sporting activities following NGB guidance and University approval, members will need to purchase a training membership to take part.
If your club enters any competitions whether it is the BUCS league, external competitions or friendlies, members will need to purchase a competition membership to cover the associated coaches e.g., officials, transport, kit. For some clubs who take part in external competitive events, rather than a membership, these will be put on sale as a ticket for your competitors to purchase when and as they occur.
BUCS competition is due to begin in January 2021. We will keep all Clubs informed of any updates around BUCS.
Sports membership includes:
- Training facilities and times
- Affiliation to your National Governing Body
- Playing kit (team dependent and if applicable)
- Referees (if applicable)
- Coaching staff (if applicable)
- Transport (minibuses / coaches / fuel) (if applicable)
- Elite Personal Accident Insurance
Checks will be carried out every week to ensure all memberships have been paid by all match day players and compeition entrants.
Please note that we reserve the right to stop a student representing the SU or the Univeristy in Sport. This is if we feel there are concerns about your attendance and/or engagement with your academic studies. The SU and the universtiy maintain a dialougue on such matters, so please bear that in mind.
Memberships are an essential part of Societies and the fee enables the society to purcase equipment, go on trips and organise events. All members of the soicety must pay the annual membership fee as determined by the committee to take part in all activities of the society.
Please note: Membership refunds will only be given within two weeks of purchase. Any requests after this time can only be granted following extenuating circumstances. Enquire at the SU Welcome Desk.
Due to the uncertain time we are in, the refund policy on all society memberships has been amended for this year. Please see our Refund Policy below for further information.
