Our statement on the FIFA World Cup

The Students’ Union will be showing matches from the 2022 Qatar World Cup in the Hangar. We are mindful of the concerns many of our students have around human rights issues in Qatar. We are proud to have a zero-tolerance policy to all forms of discrimination, including homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and misogyny.

The Students’ Union will be showing matches from the 2022 Qatar World Cup in the Hangar. We recognise the positive impact of sport and community, and the interest many of our students have in the tournament.

We are mindful of the concerns many of our students have around human rights issues in Qatar. We are proud to have a zero-tolerance policy to all forms of discrimination, including homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and misogyny. We want to reassure you that we do not condone the Qatari government’s treatment of the LGBTQ+ community.

Throughout the tournament, The Hangar and the LGBTQ+ Network will be raising funds for Stonewall through the sale of an exclusive World Cup cocktail. £1 from each cocktail purchased in the Hangar will be donated to Stonewall. We hope that in doing this we can help raise awareness of the inequalities found in Qatar.

Over the next few weeks, we want to invite everyone to come and enjoy the World Cup in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment. Please don’t hesitate to speak to venue staff, or the University PCSOs, if you have any concerns about behaviour in the SU during the games.

If you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch with us via studentsunion@worc.ac.uk
