As your Students’ Union (SU), we want to ensure we represent all of our members, promote equal opportunities, and support you all during your time at University. We believe that, within the SU and University, we can do much more to support our black members and speak out against racism.

The most important thing for us to do is listen to you, hear your stories and experiences, and give you the opportunity to have your say on what needs to be done. One way for you to do this is through the Ideas Forum on our website. The Ideas Forum gives you the opportunity to submit your ideas for change at the University and SU and can be found at www.worcsu.com/ideasforum. If you want to speak to one of your Full Time Officers about your idea, please get in touch with them via social media.

At the beginning of September, we will also be launching our new Student Networks, including the BAME Network, providing a representative forum for students to discuss the issues that matter to them. Details on the Networks will be announced during August.

Internally, we have set up an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity working group within the SU to look at how we can encourage and promote equality and equity within the organisation and at the University. We are analysing our data to look at how students engage with us and to identify the any gaps in engagement that we need to address. Over the next few weeks, we will also be reviewing our operational and strategic plans for the coming years, with racial diversity and inclusion central to these plans.

This coming Semester we will be training our staff and various student representatives, including Academic Reps and Committee members, in the concept of privilege, and how all of our groups, committees, councils, and Trustee Board can be anti-racist. We will also be giving advice and guidance around diversity and inclusion to all our Inclusivity Reps through the TeamWorc United scheme.

We are continuing to liaise with the University to communicate your opinions and ideas to them to bring about positive change at the University. Your SU President, Meg Price, has worked with staff at the University to put together a paper for consideration by the University Executive and Vice Chancellor, to outline the steps that need to be taken within the University and SU to eliminate racial inequality and inequity, and take a proactive anti-racist stance. We hope to have an update on this within the next few weeks.

This is only the beginning of our actions, and equality, diversity, and inclusion will be embedded into everything we do as an organisation. We know there is still a lot more to be done and a lot more positive change to be made.
