WELCOME TO BSL @ WORC

What is the British Sign Language Society?

The British Sign Language (BSL) Society aims to provide students with the platform to communicate with the deaf community and others who may use this recognised language. With our slogan #inclusionmatters in mind, we would like to involve anyone at any stage of their learning whether you're a beginner or expert. We will be delivering sessions where you have the opportunity to learn BSL.

What is British Sign Language?

British Sign Language is a visual means of communicating using gestures, facial expression, and body language. It’s used mainly by people who are Deaf or have hearing impairments.

Why learn British Sign Language?

You never know who you will meet when out public or who you will interact with so learning BSL is a great tool to add to your basket as a way of communicating with people. This will make them feel welcomed and included because remember #InclusionMatters!

What will you learn?

We use an online course. The course has been trialed by the previous and current committee members who all agree with the statement made by british-sign.co.uk that the course is ‘fun, easy, and flexible.’ You do not have to have any experience with British sign language. The course can cater for a multitude of learners ranging from beginners to a professional level.

You can expect to learn a range of skills and BSL, whilist compeleting an acredited course, which is inclusive of the £30 membership fee. In addition to events, workshops, guest sessions and socials/sober socials (which sometimes may include a small entry fee contribution).

You will learn the signs for: fingerspelling, numbers, colours, introductions and greetings, family, relationships, how to describe, hobbies, time, money, days, months and seasons, food and drink, emotions, animals, clothing and lots more! You'll also learn how to hold a conversation in BSL!

After completing the course with a sufficient score, you will be rewarded an accrredited CPD certificate. The british-sign.co.uk state ‘Our certificate is accredited by CPD.’ However, if you do not pass the test for each focus to the required level you will not be able to complete the course and access the certificate. You can do the test when you want and as many times as you wish.

You do not need to attend every session to become a member, as we are teaching BSL through and online course we are lucky that we can learn in the comfort of our own homes if we are unable to attend the session. The £30 membership gives you the advantage of being able to do this. You can also attend our social nights which will run alternately with the teaching week. Please, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us!

Please note: under current guidance given the Univeristy and the Student Union, our sessions will run online until we are given the go ahead that we can safely meet up in person again
