A creative space for all things POETRY: scrapbooked, spoken and crafted - find your VOICE + use it!

Hey there, Poetry People!

Are you obsessed with pretty words? A secret midnight Shakespeare? A writer of note’s app poetry? A collector of too-many-hobbies? Or a pent up, uni student with not enough sleep and big emotions to express?

Poetry Society welcomes everyone to join us in creative vigil once a week at the University of Worcester! Whether that's writing poetry or crafting poetry inspired creations, we hope to create a warm and inviting place for artistic expression in all its form, and build a safe space for everyone's unique art and perspective.

As a society, we host sessions & events like:

- Craft sessions, such as zine making, decoupage ,and more!

- Poetry sessions, such as themed writing nights, exploring poetry forms, spoken word & performance poetry and sharing sessions of our favourite poets / poems!

- Poetry workshops with teaching lecturers

- Socials, such as board games parties, movie nights, open mics and quiet study sessions!

GIVE IT A GO IN 2025:

*dates to be confirmed!!!

Blackout Poetry Bookmarks - Creating a bookmark using scrap material in a collage medium to personalise a bookmark. We will be encouraging people to add elements of poetry to their bookmarks in the form of concrete poetry and blackout poetry!!

Paint Chip PoetryWriting poetry inspired by the colours and names displayed on paint chip samples. During this session, we will be discussing the emotions associated with each colour, potentially using the colour sample names as prompts and/titles. This is a relaxing session, perfect for chilling after a day of lectures/work.

What’s in a Name PoetryInspired by a workshop held by Dr Jack McGowan last year, this session will allow members to create poetry using only the letters in their full name and pronouns. It is a fun and engaging task, and the perfect icebreaker as it allows our members to comfortably share their names and pronouns with the group.

Poetry Magnets - Like the concept of Blackout Bookmarks, members will be able to create magnets of various sizes using scrap materials to form concrete or blackout poetry on a flat magnet. Having done this previously with the society, our members enjoyed this session and have requested it return for the upcoming year. Having trialed it at the Speak Volumes poetry festival as a workshop, this is a laid-back task, good for ice breaking and meeting new people!!

Exquisite Corpse Poetry - This activity follows the use of a prompt to start off a poem, folding the paper and passing it on every 5 – 10 minutes to write a wacky and whimsical collaborative poem. This will be a good ice breaker activity and allow our members to see how others interact with similar prompts and allows our committee to see what kind of poetry our members enjoy writing.

Throughout these GIAG sessions we will be creating a safe, accessible, welcoming and inclusive environment for all who want to join our society or who just want to come along and relax in a peaceful space. We will make the price of membership known and express our excitement of our upcoming plans but there will be no pressure to join up.

OUR WEEKLY WORKSHOPS: Mondays 18:30-20:30, Room: EEG021*, St. John's Campus.

*room is subject to change depending on availability. Members will be made aware of any changes ahead of meeting times.

**We will be at the Welcome Fair, taking place on 17th September 2025!! If you have any questions you'd like to ask us in person, or if you want to pop by and say hello, come find our table!!**
