Hi, I’m Daniel McLaughlin – a 3rd year PE and Sports Coaching student, Head of Performance for the Wheelchair Basketball team, Assistant Coach for the Worcester Wolves and Chair of the Wheelchair Basketball Society for the past two years.
My goal is simple: more participation, more support and more unity across the whole university.
Inclusive Sport Programme
As a wheelchair athlete, inclusion is something that means a huge amount to me. I want to introduce a monthly Inclusive Sport Session where anyone and everyone can get involved — regardless of ability, gender, race, sexuality or course. Each month would feature a different sport, finishing with a fun, small tournament open to all students. This is about breaking barriers, trying something new and creating a space where everyone feels welcome in sport.
Interhalls Tournaments
Interhalls has been successful before — and I want to build on that. My aim is to bring back and expand interhalls competitions, not just in sport but across different activities and events. This creates healthy competition, builds hall pride and gives more students the opportunity to get involved in university life.
Spotlight Events Week
I want to strengthen support for Team Worc Spirit. Each week, we’ll spotlight a specific club, society, BUCS fixture or open session and encourage students to go along and show their support. Whether it’s cheering at a game or attending a society event, the aim is simple:
More support , more noise, more Team Worc Spirit.
Varsity-style events for Societies
Varsity is one of the biggest and most exciting events of the year — so why limit that energy to just sports? I want to create varsity-style events where societies can compete against their counterpart or closely related groups. This would give more students the opportunity to experience the excitement of Varsity — whether competing or spectating — and help boost engagement across the wider student community.
Sports vs Societies events
I want to introduce SU-led events throughout the year that bring sports clubs and societies together. Friendly competitions, mixed tournaments or challenge events would encourage collaboration, increase participation and strengthen the sense of one united Worcester community.
