JOSHUA CONCHIE

During my time at university, I was fortunate to already know which sport and society I wanted to be involved in. However, the first step is always the hardest: finding the courage to get involved, especially when you are moving somewhere new- as I did, coming from the Southeast of the country.

Not knowing anyone can feel intimidating and taking that first step requires real confidence. That is why my goal is to promote a genuine “turn up and play” mentality across all sports and societies - both within the performance setting and the social side. Everyone deserves the chance to feel a sense of belonging at this amazing university.

I am committed to reinforcing inclusion for students from all backgrounds, including those with physical disabilities or learning difficulties. This also means championing the power of a student-led voice, ensuring that students feel represented, supported and heard.

At sport and society-led events such as the Welcome Fair, it is vital that we create a positive and welcoming environment that encourages students to join. This includes promoting beginner-friendly opportunities in sport, and being open about potential barriers such as cost, so that future students feel more confident about taking part. Alongside academic success, student wellbeing is essential. Being active and social can make a huge difference to mental health, especially during stressful exam and assignment periods.

Inclusion must also extend beyond disability. Representation matters for students of all religious beliefs, cultures, and backgrounds. With an ever-growing international student population, we must recognise the courage it takes to move countries and start a new life in pursuit of education and future careers - and ensure those students feel equally welcomed and supported.

Empowering a diverse student-led community begins with strengthening student voice. Student voice is essential for meaningful change and improvement within the university. This can happen through individuals raising concerns and sharing experiences, or through committees communicating what their members want and need. To support this, I will aim to hold regular check-ins with sports and society committees to ensure everyone feels heard, and to act on feedback by providing clear updates, support, and solutions where possible.

Togetherness can also be strengthened by increasing the range and number of events available. This could include charity matches between societies, friendly tournaments, and other social opportunities that encourage students to connect beyond their own groups.

Ultimately, I am committed to making all societies and sports teams enjoyable, welcoming, and accessible for students from all backgrounds. By building a supportive and inclusive environment, we can enhance every student’s experience at university. I encourage every student to get involved in sport and activities, and to help create a community where everyone feels welcome to take part
