This is my first year in office as your VP Education.  It’s a role that I took on because I wanted to represent student views at the highest level within the University.  It is a position I am thoroughly enjoying and it’s been a privilege representing you so far, but I would like to take it further.  I want to represent the Worcester student body on the national stage at the next NUS Conference.

With the political backdrop that includes a minority government, Brexit and debate around tuition fees I believe it is more vital than ever that we have a strong NUS that truly represents the student voice in the national debate.  The last general election showed the power that students can have when united behind a cause.  We now see this influencing national discussion.  Students have power and we need a strong national union to be vocal and to hold politicians accountable.

It’s too early to predict the conference agenda in this turbulent political atmosphere.  However, whatever these prevailing conditions are when the conference takes place, I would in general support:

• A NUS that represent all member unions whatever their size and construct.
• A NUS that improves communication with students and highlights the facts on the issues we face.
• A NUS that will actively campaign for student rights and opportunities post-Brexit.
• A NUS that works collaboratively to improve the financial situation of students.
• A NUS that will strive to ensure that politicians deliver the promises they make.
