The second Course Rep Forum of the academic year took place on Thursday 6 December and focused on Assessment and Feedback. The event saw 38 Course Reps attend.

Director of Quality and Educational Development, Marie Stowell, formed the Forum's panel alongside Deputy Vice Chancellor, Sarah Greer. Also in attendance was Vice President Student Activities, Harrison Jarrett.

The Forum's Chair and Chief Executive of the Students' Union, Sophie Williams, opened the event. Sophie reminded Reps that it is mandatory to complete Rep training. If Reps have not yet completed training, they should complete the online course. Sophie also drew attention to national Higher Education issues including the Black Attainment Gap, the Augar Funding and Fees Review, and the potential impacts of Brexit on the Higher Education sector.

Marie Stowell spoke to Course Reps around Assessment and Feedback procedures, explaining that feedback from this Forum would feed into the Review of Reassessment, Regulations and Processes. Four key areas were discussed and students fed back their thoughts around each suggestion:

  • Discussion around formative assessments and whether all courses should be setting an early formative assessment
  • Level 4 (first year) modules to pilot an early reassessment scheme in 2019-20 (this would make reassessment tasks available to students in advance of the reassessment period, so students can complete reassessments 'early')
  • Looking at offering Level 4 students to re-work their original assessment, in the light of feedback provided, if they failed an assessment.
  • Placing limits on the amount of reassessments a student can be permitted to do

Reps who were unable to attend the Forum were encouraged to feedback via email around any Assessment and Feedback related issues. Both feedback at the Forum and feedback recieved via email will be considered.

Our next Forum will be held on Monday 25 March 2019 in Cotswold A (EE1106) at 13:15-14:15.
