Hello there!

End of an Era, The TEF and an Open Day

It’s the start of week four for me at the SU and I am starting to get my head around all the aspects of being a full-time officer.

On the final day of our induction period we experienced the ‘Day in the Life of an Officer’. The day is essentially an extreme day of tasks and problems that we may face during the year as an Officer. During the day I had to deal with students, angry lecturers and the media.  It was a really good experience and we learnt a lot, even if it was a little hectic!

That Friday also marked the final day of James and Hemaka’s work at the SU. It meant that the offices were oddly quiet on Monday with everyone already missing the pair. However life in the Union goes on and although we are still in a period of meeting new people and learning the role, we have begun to look and plan towards some of our goals for the year.

Thursday was also a significant day for the University and Union as it saw the release of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) results. The TEF is a new government-led tool that evaluates the quality of the student experience in terms of teaching at universities across the UK. We achieved Silver! I wrote an article about this and what it all means for the website on Thursday so if you would like to know more follow this link.

On Sunday we experienced our first Open Day. It was a good opportunity to meet prospective students and explain to them what the Students' Union is and what we have to offer. Hopefully we will be seeing many of these faces again in the coming years!
