Anyone working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults in the UK will need to complete a CRB check to show that they are a suitable candidate. The CRB checks an applicant’s criminal history in the UK. If the organisation you are volunteering for requires you to complete a CRB check they will arrange this for you and support you in completing the form. You will be unable to start volunteering with children or vulnerable adults until it is returned. You can however start volunteering in any other capacity that does not involve these individuals.
What if I am an International Student?
If you are an international student and you want to work on a project with children or vulnerable adults you will need a Certificate of Good Conduct. This is a general term given to the check of police records in a volunteers' home country, and you will need one if you have not been permanently resident in the UK for the last 5 years.
But remember, there are lots of opportunities to get involved in which do not require a CRB or Certificate of Good Conduct.
There are a number of internal volunteering opportunities in the Students' Union. These include Student Academic Representatives, Freshers' Volunteering Crew, student group committee members and part-time executive positions. Please see the Opportunities pages of this website to find out more.
If you are volunteering on a project being run by the Students' Union then you may need to attend a one-off induction training session. This lasts about an hour and will provide general information about what to expect from your volunteering experience.
External organisations may have their own training procedures. It is a good idea to keep a record of the training you have done for future positions and to add these to your CV.
