Top Tips
Our sabbs have each come up with their own top 5 Freshers' Week tips. Read on to get clued up.
Sam’s Top Tips:
1. Get out there! Talk to and meet as many people as possible, after all, these are likely to be your friends for life.
2. StARs – a great way to meet new people on your course is to be a Student Academic Representative and represent the views of people on your course to the University, making changes at course level.
3. Sport and Societies – Personally, this was the best way for me to meet new people, not only from the same year, but years above and from different courses.
4. Try something new – the Union gives you the opportunity to try a new sport or society that you have never taken part in before, and you never know, could be your number one hobby!
5. Talk to a Sabb – Talk to myself, Richard and Helen throughout the week and get to know what's going on and what your Students’ Union is all about.
Helen’s Top Tips:
1. Talk to anybody and everybody - You’ll make friends in Freshers' week who you’ll stick with for the next three years and beyond, it may be someone you live with or somebody standing behind you in a queue! Just have a chat!
2. Take a walk – Getting to know your campus and local area will make you feel much more at home. Have a walk around St Johns and the City Centre so you can get to know your local shops, parks, cafes and much more!
3. Get involved – We’ve got great events happening in Freshers' Week and all year round so see what you want to get involved in: sports, societies, volunteering!
4. Talk to a Sabb - We’re here if you need help in Freshers' Week and throughout the year so come and chat to us if you see us about.
5. Take it Easy – There's going to be a lot going on but don’t ware yourself out and get ill before lectures start, take time to chill out. We’ve got a cinema night, quiz and BBQ if you want some chilled evenings.
Rich’s Top Tips:
1. Get chatting - Everyone is the same boat so get out there and meet new people.
2. Find that balance - it's always good socialising and meeting new people but don’t lose track of why you're really here.
3. Join or start a society – it is always the best way of meeting new people outside of your course and your flat.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask – the Uni is a big place but if you have a problem ask for help from us here in the union or your lecturers.
5. Keep an eye on the monies – we know it's hard with nothing being cheap these days but try and keep to a budget.
